The Chinese New Year Menu launch at Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard

The Shard is one of my favourite buildings (okay definitely my favourite) in London and within it is housed the stunning Shangri-La Hotel. The views from the hotel are just phenomenal and I love visiting for a drink and soaking up the sight of London from an incredible height. I can never tire of the views, which are simply the best of my favourite city. One day I hope to spend the night as I would love to wake up to this views!

I was delighted to be invited to the launch of their new Chinese New Year menu in collaboration with international Emmy-nominated TV Chef and food author, Ching He Huang, and the hotel’s Executive Sous Chef, Daniel McGarey.

Over glasses of champagne and cocktails we mingled and were able to try some of the lovely dishes that will be available on the menu, at TĪNG Lounge for one month, starting from 16 February.

Having watched Ching on TV before many times, I particularly love how she emphasises on using fresh and ethically sourced ingredients, and how she always has a nod to her Chinese heritage within the dishes, which take on a modern and creative take, and so I was excited to try the dishes she had devised for the menu.

Some of the dishes I tried on the evening included A Cup of Prosperity – Three-cup Chicken with Pineapple ‘Shard’, which uses ingredients thought to bring wealth and prosperity. I did learn Chicken is always present on a Chinese New year menu. This dish was incredible and the chunks of pineapple were so moreish too.

A Handful of Laughter and Happiness – Spicy Honey Garlic Prawns was a dish that symbolised laughter and happiness and was really flavoursome and wonderfully tangy.
A Sea of Wealth was Clams in Shrimpy Hot Black Bean Sauce. The Clams are meant to resemble ‘coins’ in Chinese culture which in turn also symbolises wealth. I loved the fresh flavours of ginger and chilli in this dish and I am all for eating food that brings good fortune!
A firm favourite with everyone was ‘A Sprinkle of Wealth,’ which was Golden Tofu sparkling with edible gold sprinkles. Even the people that didn’t traditionally love Tofu were besotted with this dish. It is a must order if you are trying out the menu within the month.

Finally a Bowl of Longevity – Zhajiang Noodles, were golden yellow noodles symbolising long life and good health. This dish had pork and lots of various Spring flavours, and you are meant to eat the noodles whole – you aren’t meant to cut them!

Afterwards we were treated to a performance of dancing dragons, and it was wonderful to watch, especially as it was the first time I had gotten to celebrate Chinese New Year, and even better, at my favourite places in London.

It is definitely worth trying as everything is so delicious, the flavours are so sublime and the experience is incredible. Be quick as it will only be available for a limited time.

If you can’t make it in time to experience the Chinese New Year menu, the TĪNG Lounge is still amazing to visit, and the views will blow you away!

I really enjoyed the evening and it was such a pleasure to meet Ching He Huang, who is just absolutely lovely in person and really interesting to talk to. A big thank you to Shangri-La Hotel, at The Shard for the invitation.

The menu, which runs alongside the main a-la-carte menu in TĪNG Lounge, is available throughout the day from Friday, 16th February 2018 to 16th March 2018. A table in TĪNG Lounge can be reserved by phoning +44 (0) 207 234 8108 or emailing
