When I first heard about the Rick Stein Sunset Cinema event being advertised at Cliveden House and Chewton Glen, I was really interested in attending and just knew it would be the perfect birthday surprise gift for Amit, who is a massive fan of Rick Stein. In fact a quick glance of our recorded shows will highlight endless Rick Stein shows being watched in our house, and one of my favourite books is Rick Stein India.

I chose to attend the event at Chewton Glen on 9 July, on the premiere evening, and the movie being shown was La La Land, a film that neither of us had seen yet.

We arrived at Chewton Glen, after a very pretty drive from London, on a fabulous sunny afternoon, and decided to have lunch at The Kitchen restaurant, and then relaxed on the terrace with a Treehouse Mojito on the hotel grounds, until it was time for the drinks reception held in The Kitchen Garden, which was such a gorgeous venue.

There was a cute bar area and lots of champagne being served, and I was so grateful to get a photo opportunity with Rick Stein himself, before the film screening commenced. What was even cuter was Amit’s reaction at meeting Rick Stein, and he was lucky to be able to chat to his food hero for a few minutes.

We then went inside a huge marquee (it is so perfect for all weather conditions) and sat down on some super comfy sofas whilst we were brought our starters.

I was excited to eat Rick Stein’s food as had previously eaten at his restaurant at Barnes, which had been superb. I had chosen vegetarian starters and mains for both mine and Amit’s meal, and our starter was absolutely divine. It was such a hot day so a chilled White Gazpacho with Garlic Madras was just perfect!

There was a surprise twist, and one of my other favourite chefs, the one and only James Martin made an appearance for a short Q&A and it was already turning into the most amazing evening.

I had previously had the opportunity to have dinner cooked by James Martin for myself, and a small group on board Britannia, a P&O ship, during a Mediterranean cruise and had a photo taken with him, which was hilarious. It was great to see him again, and I really enjoyed his Q&A session with Rick Stein.

We then settled down to watch the film, and there were even blankets laid out on each sofa in case it got chilly, which was such a lovely touch! We could pre-order drinks to our seats, which arrived just before the interval, and I had opted for a Fruit Pimms Cup, which was sublime!

Our dinner was also served during the first half of the film and we had a delicious Curry of Halloumi with Tomato and Tamarind served with rice, salad and even a Papad for that extra touch.

It was magical eating our dinner watching the film in the stunning surroundings of Chewton Glen!

There were also Tom Kerridge’s Hand and Flowers ice cream tubs brought over during the interval with options of Chocolate, Vanilla and Strawberry to choose from. Amit had the chocolate, which was so decadent, and I tried the Strawberry, which was insanely good, complete with fresh strawberries and honeycomb, which I absolutely loved.

After the movie finished, we were each given signed copies of Rick Stein’s cook book, which I was really pleased about. It was such a fantastic event and fabulous way to watch a movie in some surreal surroundings.

It is so much fun and would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for something different to do during the summer. Hopefully, seeing how popular this was, there will be many more Sunset Cinema events in the near future.

The Sunset Cinema at Chewton Glen is on until 23 July so if you get a chance go! You can find out more information and book here.

The halloumi curry sounds really interesting. I absolutely love halloumi so would love to give that a try. Yum!
