A special date night with an amazing friend at Roux at the Landau

“A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though he knows that you are slightly cracked.”

There is nothing better for the soul than a fantastic catch up with an amazing friend over cocktails, champagne and fine food and one evening Aftab and I (finally) did just that.

He took me to the Michelin starred Roux at the Landau, in one of my favourite hotels, The Langham, as his plus one for a dinner review. The food is amazing as it by a fusion of amazing talent of chefs – Albert and Michel Roux Jr with Head Chef, Oliver Boon, who I had met on a different occasion at the restaurant when I went for brunch.

Aftab and I met through blogging, but we click so well and he is the one person I know I can trust, rely on and tell absolutely anything to. As you grow up you realise your circle is more about quality friends over quantity so it is important to appreciate the gems!

We had lots to celebrate so we kicked off (after already having 2 cocktails) with a bottle of Veuve Cliquot, because it was a special evening so a special bottle of fizz was required.

As we toasted to many milestones, life events and happy moments, and googled many funny things, we relaxed at the best table in the restaurant and caught up on life. This was a special occasion, not only because we had so much to be happy about, but also we had finally managed to successfully find an evening where we could actually meet up!

There will be lots more of these date nights now though as Aftab has successfully landed himself a job and I anticipate many weekday catch ups!

While we decided what we wanted to eat, we were given a canapé to start with which was a crunchy roasted red pepper potato ball with a crispy exterior and an indulgent, soft and fluffy interior.  It was so tasty!

For starters, I went for the Tomato and Cherry Gazpacho, which was served with barrette cheese and Arbequina olive oil. This was really refreshing and a stunning dish.

Aftab went for the Salt baked beetroot salad which had smoked goat’s curd, walnut praline, honeycomb and apple. My picture doesn’t do it as much justice (trying to focus with a bit of a tipsy mind) but it was beautifully presented!

For mains, Aftab chose the Fillet of aged Buccleuch beef with glazed shallot,  buffalo ricotta and red endive. He kept dipping the bread we kept eating into the sauce – it was that good!

I went for the Artichoke ravioli with barigoule of borlotti beans and nasturtium. This was a beautifully presented dish and I really enjoyed the contrasting textures, flavours and varied ingredients.

Decidedly full and rather tipsy at this point, it was time to order dessert. I went for the Bitter chocolate millefeuille with maple ice cream and salted pecans. Meera if you are reading this, it was right up your street!

Such a heavenly combination! Maple ice cream is just so scrumptious.

Aftab went for the Rum baba, caramelised banana and toasted almond ice cream, which is perfect if you are a rum lover. I haven’t got a decent photo sadly!

After dessert, Aftab fancied a shot of Baileys and so we had one in honour of his mum, and it was just the perfect way to end such a wonderful meal.

I love Roux at the Landau as it is such a pretty restaurant, the service is excellent, the food is just superb and it is a fantastic place to create some lovely memories and celebrate special occasions. It is really impressive if you want to wow someone too!
