The Gallivant – Camber Sands

If I told you this beach was in Britain, would you believe me?

It’s true! This beautiful beach, complete with idyllic sand dunes, and beautiful scenery, is located in Camber Sands, in East Sussex, and is actually one of Britain’s most beautiful and award winning beaches. Camber Sands is a 3 mile drive from Rye, and not far from Hastings too, and is the ideal destination for a fabulous weekend away, with lots of things to do and see.

It is only a couple of hours drive from London, and the beach is unbelievable. The sand is so soft and combined with that seaside aroma and sunshine, is just amazing. A far cry from the pebbles I was expecting based on my experience of other beaches.

Across the road from the beach (literally a very short walk), is an amazing, coastal chic, dog friendly and also award winning hotel, called The Gallivant, whose motto is Eat, Sleep and Beach. I can totally get on board with that!

It has 20 bedrooms, each different in style and interiors, and ranging from Cosy to Luxury Garden, which we stayed in.  It is known as a “restaurant with rooms” and the award winning restaurant, which I will come back to later, is worth the journey! It is totally worthy of these awards too.

Our room was just stunning. Massive, airy, bright and homely, with a coastal theme, which is my favourite, having been born by the coastal island of Mombasa. The bed was so big, so comfortable, that I had a really blissful sleep and even allowed myself a little bit of a lie in. We had checked what time breakfast was so we could wake up accordingly.

As a nice touch, well one of many incredible cute touches, was a beach bag filled with flip flops, chutney, sweet treats and spacious enough to fill up with other things take to the beach. This was very handy indeed!

There was also a bookshelf adorned with lovely books, ranging from fiction, jokes, non-fiction and fun. There were some lovely foodie ones for me to browse through and golf ones for Amit.

There was also a fabulous dressing table, which doubled up as a desk for me. One amazing aspect about the room was the amount of plugs available in convenient spots, as well as the mirrors! It is really well thought out.

The room had a Nespresso machine, with a drawer filled with pods, sugar and cups and saucers, so you could make a coffee in the comfort of your room, which I did do the next morning.

There were also chargeable wines, snacks and handy products available in the room, should you need them.

The quality of the products available was fantastic and it was really well stocked.

The highlight of the room for me was the navy blue bath tub, which took pride place in the bathroom.

There were sliding doors so you could have privacy, and there was a separate shower in case you didn’t want a soak in the bathtub. You would be mad not to though with a tub like that!

The toiletries were amazing and I am going to hunt for this brand. They were by a company called Bramley.

Our room led to the garden, which was stunning, and I enjoyed my coffee in the garden, taking in the fresh crisp seaside air and breeze, while enjoying the tranquility around.

I loved the little touches across the hotel, and the reception area had a chalkboard, which was updated each day, with important information.

The coastal, beach theme ran throughout the whole hotel, much to my delight, and I adored it. It was so chic, cute and stylish.

The restaurant was massive, spacious and the tables spaced out well. Our first experience was breakfast, and what a breakfast it was!

There was a table full of amazing pastries, yoghurts, cereals and even breakfast desserts, to choose from.

On a separate table, was the drinks selection, ranging from water, fruit juices, as well as a recovery station, in case you woke up with a sore head. This had bloody mary, alka seltzer and berocca. What a quirky but adorable touch!

Once we were settled at our table, we ordered a coffee for me and a tea for Amit, whilst deciding what to order from the cooked breakfast selection.

Amit went for scrambled eggs on toast, which he said from the very first bite, that they were the best he has ever had. Bold statement coming from him so I truly believed him.

I went for the Eggs Benedict, which was just so full of flavour, perfectly cooked and moreish. Perfect dish to start the day with.

After our lovely breakfast, we headed to the beach for a stroll, and a bit of chill out time, and then headed back to the Gallivant for some pre-lunch cocktails.

I went for a Mojito and Amit went for a whisky sour. Both were really refreshing and once we finished them both we settled down at our table in the gorgeous restaurant for lunch.

I was really excited about this and to find out what made it an award winning stand out restaurant. The chefs, Oliver and Kevin, have previously worked at well known restaurants such as The WaterSide Inn, Alan Ducasse and Chapter one.

The menu was very interesting, simple choice (I hate lengthy menus), with a real sense of innovative use of flavours so I was excited to try it.

To start with, I went for the bread selection, and Amit went for the Crab mayonnaise, heritage tomato and basil salad, which was amazing, and perfect dish for the seaside location.

For mains, I went for the Braised pearl barley with spring vegetables and Mayfield Swiss Cheese, which was delicious and so fresh and filling.

Amit went for the Romney salt marsh lamb served with spiced cous cous, harissa and caramelised yoghurt. It tasted every bit as dreamy as it sounded!

For our sides, we had hand cut rosemary fries, which were just superb. Perfectly cooked, seasoned and lovely taste of rosemary without it being overpowering.

The best part, even though we were so full so we had to share, was dessert. OH MY GOD. After it arrived, I was so tempted to order my own plate full of it as it was just so insanely good and so memorable that even typing about it now is setting off severe cravings.

This delectable dessert was a Peanut parfait with caramelised bananas and honeycomb. Just amazing!!

Fully stuffed at this point, but so happy, it was time to get back in the car and return to London. It was such an amazing stay though, that I am already trying to plan a return trip as it is just so fabulous.

It would be a perfect hotel to come with friends, family, kids or even for a special occasion. It would make a fantastic wedding venue too!

For me it was a lovely escape from the hustle and  bustle in London, and the location next to the beach is perfect, the hotel is a stunner and the food is just so special and so incredible.

Binny that breakfast looks absolutely amazing! I did a half day trip to Rye last year and wished I had spent longer but it’s not a long drive from home so I’m definitely going to head back and this seems the ideal place to stay!
