Kojawan

Kojawan is the brain child of chefs Bjorn Van Der Horst and Omar Romero, and is an Asian fusion restaurant and bar based on the 23rd floor of the Hilton Metropole, Edgware road. It is also the restaurant where I first tried eating crickets and drank a cocktail out of a cat. Yes the insects. Intrigued? Read on.

The restaurant has a retro-futuristic theme running through it with amazing interiors and the view from this floor, from the massive windows is spectacular and a superb alternative view of London.

The menus are cheeky and playful and described as “inauthentic treats.” I was invited to an intimate media dinner and was really looking forward to trying Kojawan, as it had been on my list of new openings to try.

What attracted me was the unconventional, yet intriguing style they have from the choice of decor, furniture, menus and food itself.

Starting with the cocktails, I went for the non-alcoholic version of their signature cocktail Astro Pussy. The mocktail version is called Milky Way. It is served in this ceramic cat, which is considered to be lucky.

How cute is it? Totally one for Instagram. This version has rice milk, peanut butter and cinnamon and it is so dreamy. The alcoholic version has rum, so is also right up my street.

The drinks menu was fun, with wine bottles categorised by sexy bottles, erotic bottles and oodles more fun sections. Really great place to come for a drink and enjoy the views.

We had a natter and enjoyed our drinks and were soon shown to a large table to begin our tasting of all the fabulous dishes on the menu. The setting was beautiful and we had a lovely view.

So this happened and it was only the first round! We had dishes ranging from crunchy cabbage with soy, ginger and sesame, hot cricket bombs with a citrus butter sauce, sesame crackers with a pork mince dip, fat noodles with clams and sake and  parmesan with fish flakes.

 

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe also had Kimchilogy, KJW Green Salad, Sticky Rice with a KJW Seasoning, Rice Sandwich with spicy crab and Wakamole, Stone Bass Poke with Shiso, Jalapeño and Sake and Suffolk Wagyu Tartar with Pear, Sea Lettuce, Chilli and Sesame Crackers.

This was a feast indeed and we also had watermelon sashimi with black radish, tofu and black bean , beef cheek with chilli, ginger and sesame, Octopus with lemon, smoked red pepper oil, sticky pork belly with jalapeño ponzu and tofu, shiitake with KJW Five Spice and moules frites.

This was the first time I tried crickets, and I have to say the hot cricket bombs were so tasty and definitely better than the taste I had pre-conceived in my mind. They went perfectly with the citrus butter sauce and there were fried crickets at the bottom – but I wasn’t feeling that adventurous. Cricket flour was used for the main cricket bombs and it tasted more like a vegetarian dish, so if you are feeling like you need to try something new this is it!

I also really enjoyed the Cobia Blue with radish and citrus Soy. It was really refreshing, and also looked so pretty.

The octopus with lemon and smoked red pepper oil was also delicious. I hadn’t had octopus in over a decade prior to this so this was a lovely dish to find on the menu.

It was impossible to take individual shots of all the food so I picked my favourites to share, mostly because there was such a wide choice to try from! Thank you Kojawan that was incredibly generous. The best thing is we tried so many dishes from the menu that I can whole-heartedly say it was an incredible meal and all the dishes have a wow factor.

Dessert was fish waffles, but not the image you have in your mind right now! Fish waffles are waffles shaped like fish and taste divine. They were served with blueberries, black sesame and a honey whiskey cream.

There were also fruit tacos called PanTako, which was a fluffy pancake shaped like tacos with white chocolate and berries.

And finally (and we were in a food coma  by now) Taipei Block with Peanut Butter, nuts, mocha and rice Sorbet. Presentation was beautiful and it was a delectable dessert.

The venue is really unique and has a fantastic theme and the views make it that much more special. The food is spectacular and the cocktails are trendy and fun. I would really recommend this venue, especially if you enjoy trying fusion food.
